“The Existential Blues” tells about the excruciating hell I went through back during my college days before I was blessed with the most wonderful gift of all: spiritual awakening.
LYRICS
Ever since I can remember I’ve always had the blues.
And so to have them today is no spectacular news.
Even though, Lord, I can’t stand them.
Looks like I’m always going to have them
Yes, I’ve got me a bad case of those existential blues.
So I go to my Daddy to tell him I am blue.
He says, “Don’t worry about it, son, it’s just a phase you’re going through.”
So I try to put my blues behind me,
But they just kept tagging along behind me,
Yes, I’ve got me an acute case (It ain’t too cute.) of those existential blues.
Chorus:
Yes, The blues is got me. Those existential blues is got me
Yea, de blues is got me. Those existential blues is got me.
I don’t know what I’m gonna do. Feel like livin’ down there in one of them zoos
Cause I’ve got me a chronic case of those existential blues.
Dad sends me to Austin College, my future for to choose.
But with no philosophical foundation I’m just cookin’ in existential stew.
They don’t tell me what is life’s meaning.
They just want to know what’s your academic leaning.
Hey, can you dig it? I’m a nowhere man with a collegiate case of those existential blues.
I take off from my room in Baker Hall, walkin’ around old Sherman town
Just a lookin’ for somebody (anybody) that doesn’t have the blues.
Though everybody thinks I’z crazy. I just don’t let that phase me.
But I cant’ find a single soul (it’s pretty heavy) who doesn’t have the blues.
Chorus with last line changed to:
Cause I’ve got me a cosmic case of those existential blues.
Try to shake my depression by checkin’ out the news.
Says our planet is now finished. Devastation is suffused.
Life is downright scary when those blues go planetary
With a global epidemic (Ow!) of those existential blues.
There’s gotta be a way out of here. Life could just not be completely bleak.
So I’m lookin’ for proper guidance. Yes, a wise man is what I seek.
‘Til then I’m lost and gone astray, cryin’ somebody please show me the way.
I’m bewildered with no clues. While my heart continues to oooze.
With a hopeless case (I think you know what I mean) of those existential blues.
Chorus with last line changed to:
Cause I’ve got me a terminal case (painful sounds) of those existential blues.
